Stephen A. Cozen, Founder and Chairman, Cozen O’Connor
Stephen A. Cozen is the Founder and Chairman of Cozen O’Connor, a Philadelphia-based law firm with 24 offices throughout the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. Under Steve’s leadership, the firm has grown from just four attorneys in 1970 to its present complement of more than 550 attorneys. Originally a boutique firm specializing in insurance related and commercial litigation, today Cozen O’Connor is a full-service law firm serving its clients’ needs in business and corporate matters; securities; bankruptcy; insolvency and restructuring; real estate; tax; public and project finance; health law; labor and employment matters; intellectual property; government relations, and trusts and estates.
An accomplished litigator and counselor, Steve is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, a designation held by only the most respected and experienced court room practitioners, and is a Fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and Litigation Counsel of America. He is also well-recognized as a consummate strategist, an appellate advocate, and is frequently called upon for specialized appellate advice, counsel and oral advocacy before both State and Federal appellate courts. Steve is a nationally recognized lecturer and author on a wide variety of legal and litigation issues, and judicial opinions frequently cite his articles and texts as authoritative references.
In connection with government relations, Steve has served as chair of the Department of Energy Advisory Committee on Fire Safety, and the Insurance Department Transition Team for Governor Rendell in Pennsylvania.
Steve has also been an important player in major financial transactions, including one of the largest national sports deals in recent history: the purchase of the Philadelphia 76ers by Spectacor and the sale of its arena sports franchise (Philadelphia Flyers) to Comcast.
Steve serves on numerous education and philanthropic boards, including The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, the Federation of Jewish Agencies, The National Museum of American Jewish History and the University of Pennsylvania’s Law School Board of Overseers. Steve also spearheaded the development of the Samuel D. Cozen Memorial Police Athletic League Center and is actively involved with the organization. He is a member of the Board of Counselors of the University of Southern California and the reconstituted board of directors for the Shoah Foundation, and currently serves on the boards of Assured Guaranty Ltd., United America Indemnity Ltd., and Haverford Trust Company.
Steve is often awarded for his skills and leadership, both within the legal arena and in the community as a whole. In 2002, he was awarded The Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) highest honor – The 25th Annual Americanism Award, and named to the lists of the 500 Leading Lawyers in America (2006), The National Law Journal’s 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America (2000), The Best Lawyers in America, and “Pennsylvania Super Lawyers” (2006-present). In addition, in 2006, the firm made a gift to the University of Pennsylvania Law School in Steve’s honor, establishing the Stephen A. Cozen Professorship of Law, and most recently, he was honored with the 2008 Musser Excellence in Leadership Award from Temple University’s Fox School of Business.
Steve earned his undergraduate degree and law degree, both with honors, from The University of Pennsylvania in 1961 and 1964, respectively. Steve was admitted to practice in Pennsylvania in 1964, before all of the courts of Pennsylvania, and in addition to many U.S. District Courts and U.S. Courts of Appeal, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the U.S. Court of Federal Claims.
Peter Piotrowski, SVP and Head of Private Client Group, CHARTISPeter Piotrowski joined Chartis Private Client Group in 2005. He has responsibility for the management of all Private Client Group Claims functions. Before joining Private Client Group, Peter held various technical and management claims positions throughout the country with over 24 years of claims experience managing state, regional, national and worldwide claims programs.
Peter began his career in 1986 with Continental Insurance Company where held a succession of assignments of increasing responsibility at locations in New Jersey, New York and California. After the merger of Continental and CNA Insurance Company in 1995, Peter transferred to Georgia and then Illinois where held positions of National Catastrophe Claim Manager and Regional Claim Vice President. Prior to joining Private Client Group, Peter worked at Chubb Insurance in Chesapeake, VA and Phoenix, AZ.
Peter is an avid bicyclist and is a certified Spinning instructor and Personal Fitness Trainer.
Paul Tuhy, Global Head of Claims, XL Insurance
Paul Tuhy is Global Head of Claims for the XL Insurance companies. He oversees all claim staff and product lines globally for XL Insurance claims operations. He has more than 25 years of insurance industry experience in increasingly senior claims management positions. Paul joined XL Insurance in December 2003. After holding positions as Head of Claims Operations for North America and Head of Claim Operations – Continental Europe & Asia, he was subsequently appointed Global Head of Claims.
Prior to joining XL Insurance, Paul held claims management positions with Kemper Insurance Company and Reliance National Insurance Company. In 1992, Paul established and managed the Blackmoor Group, Inc., the Third Party Claim Administration subsidiary of Reliance National. He also owned and managed Consolidated Adjusters, Tampa, FL, a regional independent adjusting company handling task assignments and CAT claims. Paul attended The Ohio State University and The Ohio Highway Patrol Academy.
